Great Lakes

Like an eighth world ocean in the forests of North America, the Great Lakes are a natural paradise that the HANSEATIC inspiration will visit in style. Open to new discoveries, the magic of our natural expedition: the HANSEATIC inspiration. No other expedition ship has so much open deck space. What does this mean? Freedom, wind, broad horizons – and getting up-close to nature.

The HANSEATIC inspiration, maneuverable expedition ship that will take you close to moments that you will remember forever. A ship that will take your breath away, expand your horizons and capture the beauty of nature. Where other cruises must end, yours is just beginning: the shallow draught and great maneuverability allow our new ship to follow special routes in hard-to-reach regions.

An expedition on the HANSEATIC inspiration is more than just a cruise. An expedition means being where nature sets the rhythm and experience is your teacher.  We firmly believe that the more we know, the more  intense each experience becomes. Knowledge is the key to a deeper understanding of our unique planet, which is why all our expeditions are accompanied by a team of top-class scientists who are experts in their various fields. The topics are tailored to the respective cruise destination. Biologists, glaciologists, historians and geologists plan and accompany your excursions – often off the beaten track – with invaluable knowledge, a passion for their subject and many years of experience.

Itinerary

Toronto / Lake Ontario Canada

Your expedition will begin with nautical masterpieces that most ships cannot navigate. The HANSEATIC inspiration, an expedition ship built for precisely this purpose, negotiates the eight locks of the Welland Canal with ease on the journey from Toronto via Lake Ontario.

Windsor / Detroit River

The route is clear, and before you lies vast Lake Erie as well as the impressive passage to the historic industrial city of Windsor. From here, you continue to Detroit, where classic vehicles such as the Ford Mustang were once produced. At the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village*, the historic structures of the car and open-air museum recall the era between the 18th and 20th centuries. On an excursion to Windsor and Willistead Manor*, the splendid manor house with 36 rooms invites you on a thrilling journey through time.

Tobermory / Lake Huron

Maritime charm, rather than historic cultural heritage, awaits you on your cruise on Lake Huron to the fishing town of Tobermory in Georgian Bay. Your impressive hike along the picturesque bay culminates at the local lighthouse.

Nathan Phillips Square at City Hall - Toronto, ON
Parry Sound

Parry Sound commemorates the famous polar explorer William E. Parry – a wonderful place that is ideal for exploring the little beaches along the lake’s shore. Look forward to spellbinding views on the boat trip to the 30,000 islands*: passing imposing limestone cliffs, narrow channels lead to hidden natural treasures. The scenic flight over the 30,000 islands* opens up the landscape with great pathos.

Little Current

Your route continues to Manitoulin Island. Known as “Spirit Island”, it is home to the sailing town of Little Current, which – as everywhere on the island – is deeply rooted in the indigenous culture. Get to know the traditions, language and customs on an excursion: at a powwow in M’Chigeeng*, soak up the intensive atmosphere as dancers adorned with feather headdresses and war paint step in time to the resonating drums. A local guide will hold a very personal ceremony for you on a hike on the Cup and Saucer Trail*. The insights into the local flora are just as fascinating as the views over the North Channel.

Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior
Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. Marie enchants with its Ermatinger Old Stone House and American architecture from the early 19th century. Spectacular panoramas will be revealed on the scenic journey/train ride to Agawa Canyon*. As you pass picture-book sights such as pristine rivers, lakes and the Algoma Mountains, only one question remains: can there be any place more beautiful than this? Find the answer on a hike to Pancake Bay* and the hidden Chippewa Falls. Travelling along the rocky coast, this discovery tour reveals fine sandy beaches in little bays.

Cruising on Lake Superior

Thunder Bay

Through the seldom-travelled Lake Superior, your expedition takes you to Thunder Bay, where this enchanting section of coastline invites you on adventures in the surrounding area: on a scenic journey to Ouimet Canyon and Eagle Canyon*, experience dizzying moments as you walk across Canada’s longest suspension bridge. Historic Fort William and the Kakabeka Falls* draw you into the history of the fur trade and to breathtaking waterfalls.

Duluth

Experience the Scandinavian feel of Duluth and the influence of the settlers on a city tour of Duluth*. In addition to this cultural heritage, look forward to stunning views of Gooseberry Falls and the Split Rock Lighthouse*.

Cruising on Lake Superior

Mackinac Island / Lake Huron

From Lake Superior, you will negotiate the Soo Lock on the way to Mackinac Island, which you can explore at your own pace on a bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage.

Traverse City / Lake Michigan

In Traverse City on Lake Michigan, surrender to the Victorian charm of the “jewel of the north”. The Sleeping Bear Dunes* are a unique natural spectacle, towering up to 140 m (459 ft). On the Old Mission Peninsula on Michigan’s wine coast*, the fertile ground produces the exquisite Chateau Chantal – the perfect end to this extraordinary journey into the green heart of North America.
