Itinerary

Duluth, Minnesota
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada
Duluth, Minnesota
Sail Lake Superior
Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan

Founded by French missionaries in 1668, Sault Sainte Marie is Michigan’s oldest city and one of the oldest in the US. It is also home to the famous Soo Locks, a series of parallel locks that make river travel between Lake Superior and Lake Huron possible, thereby linking Superior to the lower Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. Opened in 1855 to allow ships to bypass the St. Marys River’s 21-foot fall over roiling rapids, this innovative lock system was one of the great engineering projects of its day. Today, it guides ships past Sault Sainte Marie and its twin city in Ontario.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Steeped in the charms of simpler times, Mackinac Island is a gem of the Great Lakes. Located in the Straits of Mackinac where Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas are closest and Lakes Huron and Michigan meet, this bucolic haven preserves gilded Victorian-era treasures along car-free streets traversed by horse-drawn carriages. The perimeter road is the only state highway in the US that does not permit motor vehicles. More than 80% of Mackinac is protected as a state park, from its Greek Revival Grand Hotel and British-built Fort Mackinac to its preserved wilderness areas.

Alpena, Michigan
Door Peninsula (Algoma), Wisconsin

Algoma is the gateway to the scenic Door Peninsula, a slender limestone peninsula projecting out into Lake Michigan. It was first explored by French missionaries and fur traders during the 17th century, who named it Port des Mort, or “Death’s Door,” because of the treacherous waters separating the peninsula from nearby Washington Island. The peninsula is also the westernmost edge of the Niagara Escarpment, a prehistoric ridge that stretches more than 650 miles across the Great Lakes region, and is home to boreal forests, rugged rock formations and sandy beaches.

Explore Georgian Bay

Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland sits on the shores of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River and is a major port along the St. Lawrence Seaway. This industrial city is also a gateway to the Cuyahoga Valley and its namesake national park, a region of reclaimed nature covering 51 square miles of landscape between Cleveland and Akron. A mix of forests, wetlands and canals, as well as the majestic cascade of Brandywine Falls, the park has more than 125 miles of hiking trails that crisscross the land, including one that runs along the former route of the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

Niagara Falls (Port Colborne)

Port Colborne proudly proclaims itself the “Gateway to Navigation.” It is also the gateway to North America’s largest and most powerful cascade, Niagara Falls. Epic in its scope and volume, the falls hurl 42 million gallons of water down 20 stories every minute. Its mile-wide length straddles the Canadian and US borders and is split by islands into three smaller cataracts: Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls. Long a storied destination for young honeymooners, today the mighty torrent is a thrill for visitors.

Scenic Sailing

The Welland Canal is one of Canada’s greatest engineering feats. Built from 1824 to 1833 to bypass the Niagara River and its mighty falls, the Welland comprises eight locks that lift or lower ships a total of 326 feet between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. This scenic canal is the spine of the peninsula’s trade and industry, with numerous docks receiving ships and roadways crossing the water by either bridge or tunnel. Of the former, most open via vertical lift or drawbridge, allowing ships to pass along its waters.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto is beloved by many as one of Canada’s boldest and most innovative capitals. Hugging the shores of Lake Ontario and facing the picturesque Toronto Islands, it was founded by British loyalists fleeing the American Revolution in 1793. Today the city is a pleasure to explore on foot, whether strolling past the Victorian bay-and-gable homes of Rosedale, or the historic enclave of Wychwood Park, an Ontario Heritage Conservation district. The city’s Distillery District is home to North America’s largest preserved collection of Victorian industrial architecture. After breakfast, disembark your ship and journey home.

Itinerary

WINDSOR/DETROIT RIVER

Between the Atlantic and Pacific, there is another third “ocean” that shapes the North American landscape: the natural wonder and lifeline of the Great Lakes. The HANSEATIC inspiration has been designed to reach these places and enable the route to come particularly close to the coast. The many open deck spaces provide exciting views each day – such as during the morning departure from Windsor with a view of Detroit’s skyline or cruising on the Detroit River.

Parry Sound/Lake Huron

The HANSEATIC inspiration charts a course through a scenic labyrinth of water to reach Parry Sound. Its name pays tribute to the British polar explorer William E. Parry. Explore the town and the nearby lake shore on the marine walking trails and look forward to a boat trip of the Thirty Thousand Islands*. The varied archipelago scenery here is filled with islands emerging from the water, narrow channels and imposing cliffs. Alternatively, you can turn your focus to unforgettable panoramic pictures in Killbear Provincial Park*, where pink granite banks and green forest blend into constantly shifting compositions.

Windsor/Detroit River
Killarney

The islands around Killarney are a crown jewel in the wild nature and a paradise for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.

Tobermory

Cruising across Lake Huron to the fishing town of Tobermory on Georgian Bay is equally exciting. Small bays, deep-green forests and the limestone coast will leave you with lasting memories of exploring the Bruce Trail at your own pace.

Tobermory
Sault Ste. Marie/Saint Mary’s River

You’ll continue to Sault Ste. Marie, which lies right on the border between Canada and the USA. Explore the city of two states with a walk to the historic locks or the bushplane museum surrounded by nature.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the USA. Victorian villas and the Grand Hotel dating back to the 19th century compete for attention with the beauty of the lilac blossom. Expand your first impressions on the small tree-covered island on foot, bicycle or carriage.

Sturgeon Bay/Lake Michigan

The Door Peninsula on the edge of Lake Michigan is yet another fantastic gem to discover. Water sports such as kayaking have just as rich a history here as the shipbuilding center of Door County. You’ll sense the idyllic charm as you start making your way to Sturgeon Bay by tender boat. From here, set your sights on the enchanting Door Peninsula* with its historic brick lighthouses, fishing villages and expansive wine-growing regions.

Milwaukee

Brewing was once the focus of Milwaukee, but museums and the music scene now provide creative highlights. Discover the influence of the German immigrants of times gone by and works by many European painters on a city tour with a visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum*. Milwaukee has honoured a brand that is intrinsically linked to the American way of life with the Harley-Davidson Museum*. The pursuit of happiness is a theme in this green heart of North America – a place undeniably born to be wild.

Chicago

Reflect on the sense of great freedom as you arrive in Chicago and bid farewell to the Great Lakes with lasting memories of exploration.

Itinerary

Chicago

The Great Lakes – vibrant history and lush nature meet here where the USA and Canada converge. The HANSEATIC inspiration blends both sides for a richly varied cruise. As you leave Chicago behind, the grand highlights of North America lie ahead.

Milwaukee

In the 19th century, many German immigrants settled in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. Long known as the beer capital of America – a reputation which is still represented by a barley stalk on the city’s flag – it is now a haven of architecture and culture. Get an impression of the place yourself on a city tour with a visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum* and see works by artists including Miró, Picasso and Warhol. Find out how America’s sense of freedom conquered the world on two wheels at the Harley-Davidson Museum*.

Chicago
Fayette

During the industrialisation of the 19th century, the township of Fayette had one of the region’s most productive iron smelters. A landing in Fayette Historic State Park will turn back the hands of time.

Mackinac Island

The Victorian-style houses on Mackinac Island provide a contrast to the historic wooden buildings and blast furnaces. Explore the car-free island at your own pace on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage. Stop for a sweet treat in one of the cafes or fudge stores and quench your thirst for knowledge at Fort Mackinac, which dates back to the American Revolutionary War.

St. Mary's River
Duluth

In Duluth, the city’s striking emblematic lift bridge greets you in the port. Learn about the history of the immigrants here with a city tour* and enjoy a picture of the past at the old rail depot. Why did the Dakota tribe once call this region the “land of the sky-tinted water”? You’ll understand why once you’ve visited the stunning Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse* and seen the sky reflected in Lake Superior from the lighthouse, which was built on the high cliffs in 1910.

Thunder Bay

The power of water will also draw you under its spell in enchanting Thunder Bay. Marvel at the “Niagara Falls of the north”, where the water plunges nearly 40 m (131 ft) into the Kaministiquia River when you visit historic Fort William and the Kakabeka Falls*. Climb the local landmark made up of a flat-topped mountain ridge with dramatic granite cliffs on a hiking adventure in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park*.

Sault Ste. Marie/St. Mary’s River

Next, gain in-depth insights into the history of Sault Ste. Marie. The enormous lock system plays a key role here and the deck gives you an ideal vantage point from which to watch as the ship manoeuvres its way through. The city is divided not only by a river, but also by an international border, with Canada on your side and the USA on the other. The HANSEATIC inspiration will stay overnight, giving you plenty of time to discover the history of the settlers at the museum or explore the city on foot.

Killarney/Lake Huron

It is not just the name Killarney that has an Irish feel here: visit the “emerald isle” of George Island by ferry. Take a moment to really enjoy the nature and tranquillity here on a walk.

Parry Sound

Whether you explore by kayak, canoe or ship, Parry Sound is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, as a boat trip of the Thirty Thousand Islands* proves. The beautiful composition of blue water, green forests and white granite rock envelops you in a masterpiece of nature in Killbear Provincial Park*.

Tobermory

The tranquil fishing village of Tobermory on Lake Huron invites you to wander around the picturesque harbour or hike along the Bruce Trail through the forests to the rocky coast.

WINDSOR

Filled with the invigorating North American sense of freedom, you’ll reach the small city of Windsor on the Detroit River, with an amazing view of the imposing Detroit skyline. Just like this former “Motor City” transformed itself into a boom town, your perspective on North America will also be transformed on this cruise.
